Awards and Opportunities

What 4-H Awards and Opportunities Are Available?

What coach does not want his team to reach the playoffs or the championship round? You can consider 4-H’s world of awards and opportunities to be the 4-H Playoffs! Encourage members to take advantage of opportunities at all levels within the 4-H program.

How Can You Help Members Participate?

  • Share the educational and competitive opportunities outlined in Learning the 4-H Way with your members.
  • Encourage members to keep a written record of their 4-H activities to assist them with successful application for the many county, state and national award and trip opportunities.
  • Seek county sponsorship dollars to support members attending state and national conferences, workshops, camps and other opportunities.  Events include:  Ohio 4-H Teen Conference, Buckeye Leadership Workshop, Citizenship Washington Focus, and Carving New Ideas.
  • Help your players reach the 4-H playoffs and to the championship round!
  • Promote county 4-H award programs with your club membership including 4-H Queen and/or King, Outstanding 4-H’er and Distinguished Clubs and/or Members.
  • Support members in completing the Ohio 4-H Achievement Application to apply for County and State Project Achievement Awards, Ohio Local Government Awards, Ohio Dairy Goat Conference, National Dairy Conference, State Junior Fair Board.
  • Encourage teens to apply to serve on county 4-H and Extension committees, boards and councils and to serve as Jr. Fair Board Members, as Camp Counselors and as CARTEEN facilitators.
  • Write letters of recommendation for members applying for county or state scholarships.
  • Highlight the state camping opportunities for members 14 years of age and older to attend including Forestry Camp, Leadership Camp, Sea Camp, and Shooting Sports Camp.
  • Serve as a host family for a foreign exchange member or learn how you can travel abroad for two weeks or up to 3 months. What a great way to learn about the 4-H International Exchange Program.
  • Help members become spokes persons for your county 4-H Program by applying to become a County and Ohio 4-H Ambassador.

What Will Participation Mean?

4-H members that participate in the 4-H Playoffs become more vibrant club members. Your members will develop leadership skills, expand their project knowledge, extend their network of 4-H friends and increase their personal development skills. Do not under estimate the influence you may have to get one of your members to apply for an award, trip or scholarship. It could be the "4-H" life-changing experience for that member. Who knows, you may have a member discover their career choice while participating in a National Animal Science or Engineering Event. Lifelong relationships and cultural appreciation can result from participation in one of the many 4-H Playoffs, just waiting for your members' participation. Contact your County Extension Educator to learn about the awards and opportunities for your club members.
